Did You Know: 7 Things That Block Drains

Plumbing

Anyone who has had to deal with the problem before will definitely be able to tell you that a blocked drain at home is one of the worst and most annoying issues that a homeowner can face and something that often requires a plumber in Lismore to sort out.

Nothing puts a halt to normal kitchen or bathroom activity like a blocked drain, and here at TJM Plumbing we are the people to call on if your issue gets super serious. In the meantime, however, there are a few things that you can do to help from a DIY point of view, and that includes avoiding certain culprits! Here are seven things that can block drains.

1. Fat

Fat is one of the worst culprits, so make sure that you scrape your plates and pans as much as you can before washing them out in the sink.

2. Baby Wipes

Baby wipes are disposable, but they can be a nightmare once they are lodged in pipes. To avoid this, you should buy a small lidded bin to get rid of them instead.

3. Hair

Be mindful of the hair that is collecting around your plug hole when showering, that hair will slither down and cause a huge ball at some point in your pipe.

4. Food Scraps

Just like with the fat, make sure to scrape all of your food waste into a bin rather than allowing it to slide down the drain and cause lots of damage.

5. Expensive Toilet Paper

Luxury paper that has a large number of sheets per square is sometimes simply too water absorbent to break down in the way that your drains need it to in order to continue to operate properly.

6. Bath Salts

Some robust bath salts don’t actually dissolve in your water like you think, and the remnants over time can stick together in pipes to cause a blockage.

7. Toys

Be careful what toys you let your little ones play with in the bath! Small toys can slip down the pug hole and start causing problems when meeting other obstacles in pipes.
